Binaural Beats are achieved by playing two very slightly different frequencies (one in each ear via stereo head/ear phones). The brain then creates the ‘imaginary’ binaural beat which can be clearly heard. For example if the frequency of 100Hz is heard in the left ear and 110Hz in the right ear, the ‘ghost’ binaural beat of 10Hz will result.

The closer the two frequencies are together, the slower the beat will be and the deeper the level of relaxation that will result.

Throughout the day (and night) your brainwaves naturally vibrate at varying frequencies ranging from1.5Hz - 40Hz in the following scale:

If the brainwaves drop to zero - you’d be brain dead! But don’t worry this couldn’t happen. There is in fact no Binaural beat which could achieve this as at zero the two frequencies would be the same and therefore no binaural beat would be produced!

When listening to binaural beats, your brainwaves will gradual ‘attune’ to the frequency which causes the temporary alterations in consciousness.

Considerable research has been done into this principle. See www.monroeinstitute.org for the most up-to-date information.

Should you become disturbed while in the ‘theta’ state, you may feel a bit ‘groggy’ (like you’ve just woken up), and may need a few minutes to re-adjust, but this is nothing that is going to cause you any problems as long as you don’t do anything potentially dangerous until you are fully awake.

The more you use the technique the easier you will fall into the ‘alpha’, ‘theta’ and ‘delta’ states and consequently the more benefit you will receive.

Please don’t think that there is anything unnatural about these states. In certain situations  you could be in the alpha or even theta states when fully conscious. For instance when relaxed and walking through the woods etc.

Are Binaural Beats / Isochronic Tones safe?

For most individuals binaural/monaural beats and isochronic tones are perfectly safe as they are non addictive and non abusive. However they may not be suitable for a small percentage of the population as indicated here:

  • Epilepsy or other seizure sufferers. Due to the effect that the repeating sound pulses may have on the brainwaves, similar to strobe lighting, they could possibly induce a seizure and should therefore be avoided.
  • Due to the fact that their brains are still developing, they are not recommended for use by children except under strict medical supervision.
  • Anyone who uses a pacemaker or is taking medication (legal or otherwise), should only use brainwave entrainment recordings with medical advice.

If you don’t fall into one of the above categories, there’s no reason why they can’t be used safely and effectively, but of course  if you have any negative effects, simply stop using them.  If you are in any doubt seek professional medical advice.

Due to the feelings of relaxation they will induce they should obviously never be used when driving, cycling, cooking, operating machinery or when engaged in any other activity that may put you in danger.
